This move comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns over maritime security risks and potential disruptions to regional supply chains.
According to Hapag-Lloyd, emergency measures are currently being applied across several countries in the Persian Gulf and surrounding areas, including: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq (Umm Qasr Port), Oman, and Yemen.
These countries play critical roles in global trade and energy supply chains. Any disruption in this region could directly impact maritime transport operations and trade flows between the Middle East and key markets in Asia and Europe.

Depending on the evolving security situation, Hapag-Lloyd vessels may implement various operational measures to ensure maritime safety.
These may include anchoring in safe waters, adjusting sailing schedules, or diverting to alternative ports. Such changes could result in extended transit times and disruptions to cargo delivery schedules.
Hapag-Lloyd has also issued specific guidance for shipments impacted by the current security situation:
Shipments moving through the Middle East during this period may be subject to War Risk Surcharges (WRS) as well as additional costs at alternative ports.
These may include terminal handling charges, storage fees, container detention/demurrage, and cargo handling costs. Such measures are implemented in accordance with the terms of the bill of lading when continuation of the voyage is no longer considered safe.
